Coleman Will Not Rush Back

Defensive end Kenyon Coleman, sidelined four to six weeks after knee surgery, said he would opt for a medical redshirt year if he cannot return this season. He hopes to return but said he would not rush his recovery to impress pro scouts.

“I’m going to get a chance to play in the NFL regardless of if I play one or two games at the end of the season,” he said. “I’ve already been invited to play in the Senior Bowl.”

Arizona State Coach Bruce Snyder said Jeff Krohn, not Ryan Kealy, will start at quarterback Saturday.

Krohn, a redshirt freshman and walk-on who started the Sun Devils’ first three games, threw four touchdown passes in Saturday’s 44-20 victory over Utah State.

Kealy, a senior returning from a two-game suspension for driving under the influence of marijuana and prescription drugs, passed for 89 yards in a reserve role.

UCLA is still in search of an opponent for its opener in 2002. The Bruins will play at Kansas next year, filling the first of two vacancies created when Missouri backed out of a home-and-home series this summer. Kansas could not juggle its schedule this late to add a trip to the Rose Bowl in 2002.

The Bruins do not wish to add a road game to a 2002 schedule that already includes six road games. They will likely settle for a home game against a lesser opponent willing to sacrifice a return visit from UCLA in exchange for the big payday that comes from playing a school in the Pacific 10 Conference.
