A 21-year-old Santa Paula man was seriously injured Wednesday morning when he slammed his motorcycle into the rear bumper of a car that was slowing for a red light, authorities said.

The crash occurred shortly before 7 a.m. at Santa Clara and Central avenues in an unincorporated area between Oxnard and Camarillo, said Officer Dave Webb of the California Highway Patrol.

Brandon Newman was driving his 1997 Kawasaki east on Central Avenue at a high rate of speed when he struck a 1988 GMC passenger van driven by Maria Pesina, 51, also of Santa Paula, Webb said.

Webb said Newman was driving faster than the posted 55 mph speed limit.

Newman suffered a broken wrist, broken leg and several cuts. He was being treated in an orthopedic unit at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, a nursing supervisor said. Pesina was not injured.

Webb said speed and inattention were blamed for the crash.
