XFL Scout Attends Practice

The XFL, the fledgling spring football league jointly developed by NBC and the World Wrestling Federation, dispatched a scout to the Bruins’ practice Wednesday. Steve Malin, one of four national XFL scouts, said he is visiting 105 colleges to look at film, watch practice and assemble a list of prospects for the league.

The XFL plans to start play next year, so this year’s Bruin seniors could be next year’s XFL rookies. Tailback Jermaine Lewis said he would consider playing in the new league.

“I like entertaining,” Lewis said. ‘I’m an entertaining kind of guy.”

Offensive lineman Brian Polak wasn’t sure if he would be interested in playing in the XFL but he said he enjoyed watching the WWF.

“It makes me laugh,” Polak said. “I like a good laugh, and that’s a good source of it.”

Cornerback Jason Bell did not practice because of a strained left hamstring. With another starting defensive back, Marques Anderson, already out of Saturday’s game, Coach Bob Toledo said the Bruins could be limited in their ability to play a nickel defense if Bell is unavailable. Arizona State passed for 374 yards and five touchdowns in last week’s 44-20 victory over Utah State.
