Legoland to Open Its Third, Fastest Roller Coaster

The Legoland California theme park in Carlsbad, north of San Diego, plans to debut a third roller coaster Saturday as part of its biggest expansion since it opened two years ago.

The Lego Technic Coaster is the fastest (up to 28 mph) and has the biggest drop (42 feet) of any coaster in the 128-acre park, which was opened by the Danish toy manufacturer in 1999. (There also are Legolands in Denmark and Britain.) Also unlike the other two coasters-the Dragon, which opened with the park, and the Spellbreaker, which opened last fall-the cars hold four riders instead of two, allowing families to ride together.

On the two-minute ride, visitors will travel switchback curves in cars designed to mimic the look of Lego-built toys.

Although the park is targeted at children 3 to 12, the new coaster is aimed at ages 6 and older. “We’re giving older kids something to do,” said a spokeswoman, addressing a complaint some visitors have expressed.

Under construction next to the Technic Coaster is the Test Track Diner, the park’s first full-service, sit-down restaurant. It will seat 220 people and is scheduled to open by summer.
