Two people died Sunday morning after the airplane they were flying in struck power lines, burst into flames and crashed to the ground in Rialto, officials said.

Rescue workers responding to the scene about 12:30 a.m. extinguished the flames and found two severely burned bodies in the single-engine Cessna. Both people were pronounced dead at the scene.

“It happened in the north end of our city,” said Mark Martinez, Rialto Fire Department spokesman. “It appears it got lost in the area and clipped some lines and went into the ground immediately.”

No one on the ground was hurt.

Officials said one of the victims was a 22-year-old man from Woodland Hills. The other unidentified body was believed to be female.

The plane crashed near the Rialto Municipal Airport. It had taken off from Hawthorne Airport and landed in Rialto, before taking off again in heavy fog.
