Deputy Stabbed at Men’s Central Jail
A convicted murderer who was sentenced to life in prison faces additional charges after a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was stabbed several times at the Men’s Central Jail, officials said Monday.
The deputy, who suffered minor injuries, opened a cell door and was stabbed by Rogelio Macias, 20, about 5:55 p.m. Sunday, said Deputy Darren Harris. The injured deputy, whose name was not released, was stabbed in the back, head, arms and stomach before he was able to subdue and handcuff Macias.
The weapon was apparently made of plastic, according to Harris.
The injured deputy was taken to a hospital, treated for minor puncture wounds and released. Macias was treated for minor injuries at the jail clinic.
Macias was convicted of murder and sentenced March 21 to life in prison without the possibility of parole. He was awaiting his state prison assignment. Harris said Macias now faces another charge of attempted murder or assault with a deadly weapon.
The inmate will be segregated from the general population and taken to a more secure area, Harris said.
