Festival Adds Exhibit and Opera to Bill

The Philharmonic Society’s third annual Eclectic Orange Festival will incorporate a musical exhibit at the Orange County Museum of Art and also draw for the first time on a Long Beach Opera production, among other newly announced events.

The “You Are Hear” exhibit at the Orange County museum, from Oct. 6-29, will include events and artworks.

There will be two large-scale sculptures by Seattle-based artist Trimpin, a video installation of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Helicopter Quartet,” performances of Gyorgy Ligeti’s “Poeme Symphonique” for 100 metronomes, and a prerecorded program of 20th century keyboard works performed on Yamaha’s limited edition Disklavier Pro 2000.

Additionally, New York composer Mikel Rouse’s new film, “Funding,” will receive its world premiere. The museum is at 850 San Clemente Drive in Newport Beach. Prices: $5 for adults; $4 for students and seniors. Free to children younger than 16.

Long Beach Opera will give the West Coast premiere performances of Thomas Ades “Powder Her Face” on Nov. 9 and 11 at the Carpenter Performing Arts Center, 6200 Atherton St., Long Beach. Tickets: $45 to $70. ($30 for students and seniors.)

Also joining the roster of festival events previously announced are:

* Oct. 13, Irvine Barclay Theatre, 4242 Campus Drive: A.R. Gurney’s concert-play, “Ancestral Voices.”

* Oct. 27, Irvine Barclay: humorist David Sedaris.

* Oct. 27, Orange County Performing Arts Center: Yamato, Japanese wadaiko (traditional drumming) troupe. (Yamato replaces the Haris Alexiou concert previously announced for Oct. 26.)

* Oct. 28, Performing Arts Center: John Alexander conducts the Pacific Chorale in Verdi’s Requiem.

Additionally, repertory for the previously announced Joe Goode Performance Group, on Oct. 11 and 12 at the Irvine Barclay, will include the premiere of “The Transparent Body,” co-commissioned by the theater.
