Jack Wilson will start at shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the season opener today at Cincinnati.

Wilson, who played at Thousand Oaks High and Oxnard College, batted .260 in spring training. The Pirates moved former shortstop Pat Mears to second base and optioned Warren Morris to triple-A Nashville.

Acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in a July trade, Wilson was a career .314 hitter in the minors. He played for Pirate Manager Lloyd McClendon at Lancaster in the California Fall League in 1999 and again last season in the Arizona Fall League.

“You have to start wearing nice clothes now that you are in the major leagues,” Wilson said jokingly.
