Costa Mesa Man Held After Car Crash Kills Rider
A Costa Mesa man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after his speeding car hit a utility pole late Thursday, killing his passenger, police said.
Steven Cassidy, 31, of Costa Mesa, was a passenger in the 2000 Nissan Maxima driven by Lance Smith, 30, who was traveling south on Red Hill Avenue at speeds up to 100 mph shortly before midnight, said Sgt. Don Holford.
Smith lost control of the car at Fischer Avenue, and it slammed into a pole. Cassidy died at the scene, Holford said.
Smith was treated at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana for cuts, bruises and a concussion, then arrested, Holford said.
