Saving Fairfax

Share

* “Fairfax District Is Rediscovered” [April 3] gives the impression that the Fairfax area is some rundown neighborhood where residents are waiting for someone--anyone--to come and rescue them. What a misconception!

It is as inaccurate as the hot air being blown by all the developers and city planning officials who have recently swooped into Farmers Market and Park La Brea to save us. Part of their plan is to dig 40-foot holes in the ground, snarl traffic for the foreseeable future and erect apartment buildings that have the same density and charm as the Twin Towers jail.

Maybe we residents are just not progressive enough. We just don’t see the charm and appeal (like developer Rick Caruso) of having a Nordstrom and a Starbucks on every corner--and of losing every bit of open space.

Some of my fondest memories are of riding my bike through the Farmers Market parking lot as a child. Somehow, riding my bike through seven levels of underground parking just doesn’t have the same appeal.
