A Los Angeles County sheriff’s detective was critically injured Tuesday morning after his undercover vehicle collided with a 1-ton Chevy truck on a canyon road in Santa Clarita, authorities said.

The detective, whose name has not been released, had stopped his Pontiac Grand Am on the northbound side of Plum Canyon Road east of Via Joyce Drive as part of an undercover investigation, California Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Odle said.

The detective then drove into the roadway and attempted to make a U-turn, police said.

“He failed to see a northbound truck, which struck him on the driver’s side door at somewhere around 45 mph,” Odle said.

The detective was airlifted to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital in Valencia, where he was listed in critical condition, police said. The driver of the truck was not injured.

“We have no indication that the [truck] driver was at fault,” Odle said. “The deputy made a U-turn and failed to yield the right of way.”
