Kings Impress Against Spurs

Heading into overtime at San Antonio, the Sacramento Kings needed a strategy other than trying to stop Tim Duncan.

Duncan had already tied his season-high 36 points and forced overtime by making his eighth of 10 free throws.

Duncan went on to score San Antonio’s first six overtime points, but the Kings limited the rest of the Spurs, claiming a 107-105 victory Thursday night and an NBA record for overtime victories in a season.

“We were just patient,” said Chris Webber, who had 26 points before fouling out and sending Duncan to the line at the end of regulation. “We knew Tim was going to score. We just tried to control the boards and control everyone else.”

After Antonio Daniels made a three-point basket with 54 seconds left in overtime to give the Spurs a 105-103 lead, Vlade Divac tied it with a layup.

When Danny Ferry missed a 16-foot jump shot with 13.7 seconds left, Peja Stojakovic secured Sacramento’s victory with a running jump shot with 2.4 seconds left.

Sacramento won its ninth overtime game and extended its winning streak to five games while snapping the Spurs’ five-game winning streak.

The Kings (54-24) trail the Spurs (56-23) by 1 1/2 games in the race for the best record in the league.

Duncan finished with 42 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four blocked shots. Webber had 13 rebounds, six assists and two blocks.

Milwaukee 115, Utah 93--Ray Allen scored 30 of his career-high 43 points in the first half at Milwaukee as the Bucks ran away from the Jazz.

Allen matched the Buck record of eight three-point baskets, set earlier this season by Tim Thomas against Portland. His previous scoring high was 42 points.

The Bucks improved to 8-0 against the top four teams in the much-ballyhooed West: San Antonio, Sacramento, the Lakers and Utah.

The Jazz fell two games behind the Lakers for the third spot in the Western Conference.

Orlando 101, Philadelphia 77--Tracy McGrady scored 25 of his 31 points in the first half to lead the Magic to victory at Orlando, Fla.

Philadelphia’s Allen Iverson, the league’s leading scorer, was held to 12 points.

Portland 100, Vancouver 87--Rasheed Wallace scored 27 points at Vancouver, Canada, to help the Trail Blazers move into fifth place in the Western Conference, a half-game ahead of Dallas.

Charlotte 88, New Jersey 78--Elden Campbell scored 22 points at Charlotte, N.C., to help the Hornets end a four-game losing streak.
