It wasn’t quite the blink of an eye, but the changeover of the Staples Center’s floor from basketball to hockey was done in remarkably quick fashion.

Lee Zeidman, who is in charge of building operations, said the temperature in the building was gradually lowered during the second half of the Lakers’ game against Portland to be sure the ice would be solid. “There weren’t a lot of timeouts taken,” said Zeidman, who believes changing from hockey to basketball is easier than the other way around. “I told [Portland Coach] Mike Dunleavy and [assistant coach] Jim Eyen not to use any timeouts so we could get started quicker.”

Zeidman said he and his staff took advantage of the building’s inactivity Saturday to prepare the ice for Sunday. “We did six floods and cleaned it up,” he said. “It hadn’t been used in 12 days.

“Our target was for them to get on the ice by 7 [Sunday] and we made it.”

The NHL fined Detroit defenseman Chris Chelios $1,000 for “careless use of the stick” in jabbing the Kings’ Luc Robitaille in the face early in the third period of Game 2. “Although it was determined that there was no intent to injure on the play, all players must be held responsible for the careless use of their sticks,” NHL Vice President Colin Campbell said. . . . The Kings unveiled the logo for the 2002 All-Star game, to be played Feb. 3 at Staples Center. It features--surprise!--stars on a shield and the words “LA 02.”
