From Times Wire Reports

A rescue team landed in Antarctica and plans to head to the South Pole today in a risky effort to evacuate an ailing American doctor.

Ronald S. Shemenski, 59, is the only physician among 50 researchers at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica. He recently suffered a gallbladder attack and has been found to have pancreatitis. Doctors say his condition is stable, but he needs surgery.

Kenn Borek Air Ltd., a Canadian airline company, is leading the evacuation attempt.
