Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating the death of a woman in her early 20s whose nude body was found early Sunday morning by a surf fisherman in a remote section of rocky beach near Mussel Shoals.

The fisherman discovered the body about 6 a.m. as he prepared to cast a line into the surf from the beach near a cul-de-sac off the Ventura Freeway, said Ventura County Sheriff’s spokesman Eric Nishimoto.

The area is located below an open stretch of the freeway that runs parallel to the beach and Old Rincon Highway.

No identification was found near the body. Coroner’s officials said they will use the state’s fingerprint database to try to find a name.

It was not known how the woman died, how long she had been dead or whether she died at the scene or was dumped there, authorities said.

The nearest offramp is about a quarter of a mile away. The beach area is open 24 hours a day but is closed to cars overnight, said a sheriff’s deputy at the scene who patrols the area.

Several investigators searched for clues on the beach and in the surf.
