Staples Center Honored for Revitalizing Efforts

Staples Center has been honored for its role in revitalizing the South Park area of downtown Los Angeles. The center received the 2001 Skyline Award last week from the Los Angeles chapter of Lambda Alpha International, a professional organization that promotes the understanding of land-use economics.

The center’s location next to the Los Angeles Convention Center “has further bolstered the energy of the South Park area of downtown Los Angeles” and is “bringing new vitality to an area long seen as out of the mainstream of downtown urban development,” Lambda Alpha said.

The chapter presents the Skyline Award to recognize efforts toward the “preservation, development or better utilization of the land resources of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.” Previous recipients include Old Town Pasadena in 1998 for its preservation efforts, Paramount Studios in 1995 for its renovation program and Maguire Thomas Partners in 1993 for the Los Angeles Central Library renovation.
