Armenians to Protest Turks’ Denial of Genocide
Armenians throughout Southern California will gather today for a series of public events to remember victims of the first-recorded genocide of the 20th century, when an estimated 1.5 million people were killed by the Turks during World War I.
A protest will be held in front of the Turkish Consulate, 4801 Wilshire Blvd., at 3 p.m.
Thousands are expected to march, chant and hold protest signs that call for the Turkish government’s acknowledgment of the genocide, which it has long denied.
Also, for the first time this year, the United Armenian Students, a group of university students from throughout the Southland, will sponsor a march at 11:30 a.m., beginning at Hollywood Boulevard and Hobart Street, culminating with a performance at noon at Sunset Boulevard and Hobart, in the Little Armenia section of Hollywood.
More than 10,000 people are expected at the Hollywood event, which will include a symbolic dance and the unveiling of the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Quilt.
Also at noon, there will be a gathering at the Armenian Martyrs’ Monument in Bicknell Park in Montebello.
