David Gilliland of Chino won the 75-lap Super Late Model main event in front of 5,391 Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway.

Gilliland started the race in the 14th position. He passed pole-sitter Tommy Fry on turn 2 of the final lap and won by one-tenth of a second.

The race was stopped with three laps to go when Mike Walker of Pasadena spun out going into turn 3, resetting the field.

On the green flag, Gilliland dove to the low part of the track and moved into second place.

“I knew I couldn’t catch him [Fry] on the green, but the yellow gave my tires a chance to cool down,” Gilliland said.

“I just put it all out for the final laps.”

Brandon Loverock of Norwalk finished third followed by rookie Rip Michels and Brent Reynolds.

Reynolds completed the race in fourth place, but lost a position after getting a jump on the restart.

The race also had to be restarted after the first lap because David Pook of Long Beach and Greg Voigt of Goleta collided going into turn 1.

Pook was sent off for instigating the accident.
