Jones Carries the Galaxy, 3-2

Cobi Jones scored the 49th and 50th goals of his Major League Soccer career to lead the Galaxy to a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday at Denver.

After Jones put the Galaxy ahead, 2-1, Galaxy midfielder Sasha Victorine added a goal in the 69th minute before a crowd of 8,309.

Jones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, racing past a defender and sliding the ball into the lower-right corner.

Junior Agogo tied the score for the Rapids (0-3-1) in the 44th minute.

But the Galaxy (2-2) countered on Jones’ goal from the penalty area in the final seconds of the half.

“They tied it up and we responded well,” Jones said. “We came right back and scored. I think that really helped us mentally and kind of demolished them going into the half.”

John Spencer scored for the Rapids in the 86th minute.

In other MLS games:

New York-New Jersey 3, Dallas 2--Clint Mathis had a goal and an assist to lead the MetroStars before 17,543 at East Rutherford, N.J.

The MetroStars (2-1-1) had only five shots on goal in the first half but scored twice.

Petter Villegas took a diagonal pass from Mathis in the 22nd minute, eluded charging Burn goalie Matt Jordan, and shot the ball in. Fifteen minutes later, Mark Chung scored when his left-footed shot went between Jordan and the near post from 12 yards.

Mathis scored in the 60th minute with a solo run.

Richard Farrer knocked in a rebound off the left post in the 71st for Dallas (2-2).

Chicago 1, Tampa Bay 0--Josh Wolff, who scored the only goal for the United States in a victory over Costa Rica, scored on a 20-yard free as the Fire (2-1) won at Tampa, Fla., in front of 10,602.

Wolff left because of a foot injury after being tackled from behind by Craig Demmin. He was scheduled to have X-rays Saturday night.

Kansas City 0, San Jose 0--Wizard goalie Tony Meola made a sprawling one-handed save in the first half to thwart San Jose’s best scoring chance before 14,521 at Kansas City, Mo.

Meola’s 16 shutouts last season set an MLS record and earned him the league’s most-valuable-player award.

Joe Cannon of San Jose (1-2-1) became the first goalie this season to blank defending champion Kansas City (3-1-1).

Miami 1, New England 0--Alex Pineda Chacon scored in the 80th minute to give the Fusion the victory in front of 14,381 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Diego Serna centered a pass to Chacon, who one-timed a shot outside the six-yard box that beat goalkeeper Juergen Sommer. Chacon has scored five of Miami’s seven goals.

Goalkeeper Nick Rimando of Miami (4-1) had two saves for his second shutout, both against the Revolution (0-4).

Mia Hamm hurt her knee but returned to score on a free kick during injury time, rallying the Washington Freedom to a 2-1 victory over the Carolina Courage at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Hamm’s goal was the first by a U.S.-born player in the inaugural WUSA season. The game drew 6,012 fans, many there to see Hamm, a three-time All-American at North Carolina.

Hamm left the game briefly in the first half after a hard tackle by Carolina’s Erin Baxter.

Brazilian star Pretinha scored in the 82nd minute off an assist by Hamm.

Washington improved to 2-0. Carolina is 0-2.

Atlanta 0, Philadelphia 0--U.S. national team goalies Briana Scurry and Saskia Webber each made six saves in the tie before 11,228 at Atlanta.

Atlanta’s Scurry and Philadelphia’s Webber each made saves in the final minutes.

Philadelphia is 1-0-1 and Atlanta is 0-0-2.
