Girl, 11, Playing With Cloth Strip Hangs Herself
An 11-year-old girl who accidentally hanged herself while playing near a stairway in her home was identified Sunday as Honesty Spencer.
The girl was playing with a “long strip of cloth” when she stepped off a landing, said Deputy Ron Bottomley, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. She was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, where she was pronounced dead about 6:45 p.m. Saturday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Sheriff’s homicide detectives investigating the death in the 45000 block of Rachel Avenue, where distraught family members had gathered, ruled the death an accident, authorities said Sunday. The cloth appeared to be a “bathrobe tie-around,” said Sheriff’s Deputy Cruz Solis.
It was not clear whether the girl’s parents were home at the time of the incident.
“It’s a very unfortunate accident,” Bottomley said. “She was just playing.”
