Barry Bonds hit his major league-leading 46th home run and Jason Schmidt gave up one hit in seven innings against the team that just traded him as the Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 3-1, Wednesday night at San Francisco.

The Giants won their seventh consecutive game with an excellent debut from Schmidt (7-6), traded from Pittsburgh to San Francisco on Monday. He faced 22 batters--one over the minimum--and struck out eight, one shy of his season high.

Jason Kendall’s home run in the fourth was the only hit against Schmidt, who also drove in his second run of the season. Giants’ fans gave him a standing ovation as he headed to the dugout after the seventh.

Bonds immediately gave his new teammate some run support. In the first inning, Bonds hit a drive off rookie Joe Beimel (5-7) onto the walkway atop the right field fence at Pacific Bell Park for a solo homer.

Bonds’ 540th career homer put him eight behind Mike Schmidt for eighth place on the career list and kept him on the record pace set by Babe Ruth, who also hit 46 homers in 108 games for the Yankees in 1921. Mark McGwire had 45 home runs through 108 games on his way to a record 70 in 1998.

Montreal 8, Arizona 5--Lee Stevens hit a three-run homer and Orlando Cabrera had a two-run shot as the Expos snapped their four-game losing streak by beating the slumping Diamondbacks at Phoenix.

Luis Gonzalez went four for four with his 42nd homer and Reggie Sanders added a home run. But the Diamondbacks otherwise were unable to solve Expo starter Mike Thurman (6-7), losing for the 16th time in 25 games.

Thurman gave up six hits and two runs in seven innings, striking out six and walking two.

New York 8, Houston 2--Newcomer Matt Lawton hit a tiebreaking single in the 10th inning and Edgardo Alfonzo followed with a three-run homer to lead the Mets at Houston.

Pinch-hitter Lenny Harris hit a one-out single in the 10th off Mike Jackson (2-2) and went to third on Tsuyoshi Shinjo’s single. Lawton then singled to right field to give the Mets a 3-2 lead.

Alfonzo’s 11th homer made it 6-2 and Todd Zeile added a two-run double off Octavio Dotel for the Mets.

Rick White (3-1) pitched a perfect ninth for the victory as the Mets held Houston to four hits.

Florida 5, Milwaukee 4--Derrek Lee doubled to start a three-run rally in the ninth inning, then hit a run-scoring double with two outs in the 10th for the Marlins at Milwaukee.

Florida, which was 1-46 when trailing after eight innings, scored three in the ninth off Curtis Leskanic on Jeff Abbott’s run-scoring single and pinch-hitter Charles Johnson’s 18th home run.

Cliff Floyd led off the 10th with a double against Ray King (0-3). Reliever Mike DeJean got two outs before Lee doubled.

San Diego 4, Chicago 3--Tony Gwynn hit a run-scoring double and the Padres rallied with three unearned runs in the seventh inning to beat the Cubs at San Diego.

The Cubs, who have the National League’s best record, lost for only the fourth time in 11 games.

Gwynn, pinch-hitting for pitcher Bobby Jones (7-13), doubled to right off Felix Heredia (2-2) to bring in Ben Davis and pull the Padres to within 3-2.

David Weathers replaced Heredia and Rickey Henderson hit a hard grounder that went through second baseman Eric Young’s legs for an error, scoring Jimenez and Emil Brown, who was pinch-running for Gwynn.

Philadelphia 8, Colorado 1--Randy Wolf gave up four hits and the Phillies ended a four-game losing streak, winning at Denver in a game stopped in the seventh inning because of rain.

The start at Coors Field was delayed 1 hour 23 minutes by rain. The game was called two pitches into the seventh after a 1 1/2-hour wait.

Wolf (6-10) won for the first time since May 23.
