Moorpark College Construction Plans

Share

The Conejo Valley Unified School District’s plans include constructing an extension of Moorpark College on property owned by the school district at the 23 Freeway and Janss exit between the soccer fields and the park-and-ride next to the district’s offices. This proposal needs to address many questions.

* How will building a college satellite campus help with the overcrowding problem of Thousand Oaks schools?

* What about the increase in traffic off the freeway at Janss, over Erbes and down La Granada? How about the overflow parking on the surrounding streets? Where will the soccer parents and coaches park for games and practices? Do people who live on these streets know how horrific an effect this college will have on their quality of life?

The plan calls for Conejo Valley High School, a continuation school site, to be sold to Selleck Bros. for use as part of a hotel and shopping complex for $6 million. But the district will spend $17.5 million to replace the facilities. Will a new bond issue be needed to pay for the rest?

Do your children’s teachers have a classroom that is big enough? Three leased facilities in the district are being used for adult education and private classes. They could be used to relieve the overcrowding--especially in the middle schools.

Why do the district’s elected officials stay quiet in the planning stages of major projects that affect the money spent on our schools? Why isn’t the district putting the education of our children first?
