The 12,000-gallon spill of bunker oil, a heavy fuel, could begin to wash up on beaches in Humboldt and Del Norte counties within a week.
The 626-foot Swedish vessel MS Tristan was 35 miles off Newport, Ore., heading north to Tacoma, Wash., when the spill occurred as the crew was moving fuel from one tank to another.
