Kenny Perry shot his second straight eight-under-par 64 Saturday to set three Buick Open records and take a five-stroke lead after the third round at Grand Blanc, Mich.

Perry had a 22-under 194 total to break the tournament 54-hole record. He also tied the tournament nine-hole record for the second consecutive day with a 29 on the back nine, and tied the record for best 36 holes played in the 43 years of the event.

He needs a 67 today to break another record, but he’s more interested in winning for the first time in six years.

“I’m really hungry to win again,” Perry said. “The only thing on my mind is winning. Records don’t mean anything.”

Ireland’s Padraig Harrington (65) and Jim Furyk (66) are at 199. Justin Leonard tied the third-round tournament record with a 63 to join Chris DiMarco (65) and Bob Tway (67) at 200. Tom Pernice Jr. (66) and Brian Wilson (64) are seven strokes behind.

Robert Wrenn set the previous 54-hole record in 1987 en route to a record 26-under 262.

Perry’s last win was the 1995 Bob Hope Classic, his third career victory. He has played well lately, finishing among the top 11 in four of his last seven tournaments.

Erik Compton battled back from an early deficit and so did the U.S., winning five of the eight singles matches to take a one-point lead over Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup at Sea Island, Ga.

By the end of a sweltering day on the Ocean Forest Golf Club, the United States held a 6 1/2-5 1/2 lead at the halfway point in the amateur version of the Ryder Cup.

The Americans didn’t take the lead until Lucas Glover returned from a storm delay to defeat British Amateur champion Michael Hoey, 1-up.

Glover and Nick Cassini, the nephew of fashion designer Oleg Cassini, were the only Americans to win both their matches.

The cup will be decided after 12 more matches today--four alternate-shot matches in the morning followed by eight singles matches.

Spain’s Jose Maria Canizares had six birdies in an eight-hole stretch en route to a six-under 66 and a share of the lead with Hale Irwin in the Senior Tour’s 3M Championship at Blaine, Minn.

After a bogey on No. 5, Canizares started his birdie spree on No. 6. He capped the round with a birdie on No. 18 to match Irwin at eight-under 136.

Irwin shot a 68. First-round leader Mike McCullough and senior newcomer Bruce Lietzke were two strokes back.

U.S. Senior Open winner Bruce Fleisher (67) and Bobby Wadkins (68) were three strokes back at 139, and Gil Morgan (68) and Tom Jenkins (69) followed at 140.

Wendy Ward had 10 birdies in a career-best 62 to build a four-stroke lead with a 17-under 127 through two rounds of the LPGA Wendy’s Championship for Children at New Albany, Ohio.

Ward’s 62, a shot better than her previous low on tour, broke the New Albany Country Club record of 63 set earlier in the day by Mhairi McKay. Leta Lindley had matched the competitive mark in the first round with a 64.

Ward’s round tied the second-lowest score on tour this year, exceeded only by Annika Sorenstam’s record 59.

Seventy players were under par in their second round and 38 broke 70. The cut was two-under 142, matching the lowest this year on tour.
