Pedro Martinez of the Boston Red Sox experienced no problems during a 10-minute throwing session off a mound Monday.

Martinez has been sidelined because of an inflamed right shoulder since June 26, and the Red Sox have struggled without their best pitcher. He is 7-2 with a 2.26 earned-run average and 150 strikeouts in 103 2/3 innings.

The Red Sox, who were 1-4 on last week’s trip, start a three-game home series with the AL West-leading Seattle Mariners tonight. Boston is three games behind the first-place New York Yankees in the AL East and two games behind the Oakland A’s in the wild-card race.

Martinez’s next step is a live batting practice session or a simulated game at midweek.

Orlando Hernandez will make a rehabilitation start for the Staten Island Yankees on Thursday against Pittsfield.

The New York Yankee right-hander was put on the 15-day disabled list June 1 because of an inflamed toe on his left foot.

In two previous rehab starts for Class-A Tampa, Hernandez did not give up an earned run in seven innings. He was 0-5 with a 5.14 ERA in nine starts for the Yankees this season before being put on the disabled list.

The Chicago Cubs activated third baseman Bill Mueller, who had been on the disabled list since May 14 because of a broken left kneecap.

In eight rehab games at triple-A Iowa City, Mueller batted .423 and did not have an error in six games at third base.

Arizona Diamondback first baseman Greg Colbrunn, on the disabled list since July 1 because of a left knee sprain, scored from first on a double in a triple-A game Saturday and should complete his rehab assignment soon.

“There are no ill effects from anything he’s done to this time,” Arizona Manager Bob Brenly said.

Pam Gardner will take over as president of business operations for the Houston Astros at the end of the season, becoming the second woman to hold that position with a major league team.

She will replace Bob McClaren, who is resigning to pursue family business interests.

Gardner spent 12 years with the Astros and was senior vice president of sales and marketing before resigning in January and moving with her family to New York.
