From Times Staff and Wire Reports

In a victory for cities using cameras to catch drivers who run red lights, a Superior Court judge on Wednesday rejected a challenge filed on behalf of hundreds of San Diego motorists who argued the devices are unconstitutional.

Judge Ronald L. Styn rejected all five arguments presented, including claims that the cameras violated the city’s police power and motorists’ right to privacy.

Two lawyers contended the devices are really intended to make money for the city and Lockheed Martin IMS, which installs and maintains the cameras and processes the film in San Diego and 33 other U.S. cities.

The lawyers sought the dismissal of citations issued to about 400 motorists from cameras at 19 San Diego intersections.
