Heat Claims 2 More Illegal Immigrants
With six more weeks of blistering heat expected, the Imperial Valley appears to be on a pace to set a record for illegal immigrant deaths.
A 30-year-old Mexican woman who died near Ocotillo over the weekend and the body of another immigrant found Monday brought the number of dead to 78, more than in all of last year.
“I don’t see it letting up any time soon,” said Rick Williams, a deputy sheriff with the Imperial County coroner’s office.
Nearly all immigrant deaths in California occur in this rugged desert crisscrossed by agricultural canals 100 miles east of San Diego.
