The new exhibition “Heavenly Visions: Shaker Gift Drawings and Gift Songs,” which opened earlier this week at the UCLA Hammer Museum, focuses on the little-known Shaker custom of translating intense religious experiences into drawings. Composed of about 135 gift drawings, manuscripts of gift songs and related texts created by the Shakers from 1837 to 1850, the exhibition examines the historical interpretations of the drawings as well as the contemporary relevance of each.* “Heavenly Visions: Shaker Gift Drawings and Gift Songs,” UCLA Hammer Museum, 10899 Wilshire Blvd., Westwood, through Oct. 21.
