Two men were plucked from the frigid waters off the Palos Verdes Peninsula on Sunday morning after their plane developed engine trouble, forcing them to ditch the aircraft and parachute to safety, authorities said.

One of the men broke his ankle and the other suffered hypothermia in the 57-degree water, said Los Angeles County Lifeguard Capt. Dave Story.

The plane took off from Long Beach Airport. The pilot told authorities they were practicing acrobatic maneuvers when the engine failed and the plane began to descend at 11:30 a.m., about a mile from White’s Point in San Pedro, U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
