The Phoenix Coyotes were lucky and they knew it.

Daymond Langkow’s goal with 32.4 seconds left in regulation time helped Phoenix to a 1-1 tie with the Red Wings on Friday at Detroit.

“We’ve got to get out of here in a hurry, before the cops show up,” Phoenix Coach Bobby Francis said. “We stole one tonight.”

Langkow’s wrist shot from the right face-off circle beat goaltender Dominik Hasek high to the glove side.

Sergei Fedorov had almost put the game out of reach seconds earlier, but his diving shot on a partial breakaway rolled just wide of the empty net with Phoenix goaltender Sean Burke pulled for the extra attacker.

Burke stopped 46 shots as the Red Wings outshot the Coyotes, 47-23.

“He single-handedly kept us in the game for 40 minutes,” right wing Shane Doan said.

Nicklas Lidstrom gave Detroit a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 5:02 into the second period, when his shot from the right point deflected in off the skate of Coyote defenseman Paul Mara.

The first period was scoreless despite Detroit’s 22-4 shot advantage as Burke made several difficult stops. The Red Wings’ Brett Hull had five shots--all good scoring chances--in the period.

Earlier Friday, Lidstrom signed a two-year contract extension which will make him the NHL’s highest-paid defenseman by next season. It’s a two-year deal worth about $10 million per season. St. Louis’ Chris Pronger makes $9.5 million annually and Colorado’s Rob Blake makes $9.3 million.

Lidstrom, 31 and in his 11th season, is in the last season of a three-year deal, which is paying him more than $8 million this season.

Jere Lehtinen had two goals and Mike Modano added a goal and two assists for the Stars, who had been 0-3-3 at home since Nov. 2.

Turco posted his second shutout of the season and fifth of his career as the Stars improved to 5-1-2 in their last eight.

Oiler goaltender Tommy Salo was pulled following the first period after allowing four goals on seven shots.

Chicago 4, New York Islanders 3--Eric Daze scored three power-play goals to lead the Blackhawks at Chicago.

The Blackhawks are off to their best home start (11-1-3) since the 1994-95 season.

Daze tied a Blackhawk record shared by four others for power-play goals in a game.

Colorado 4, Buffalo 1--David Aebischer made 26 saves and Joe Sakic, Dan Hinote, Steve Reinprecht and Milan Hejduk scored for the Avalanche at Buffalo.

Colorado extended its unbeaten streak to seven games.

Mario Lemieux, who missed the Penguins’ last nine games with a sore hip, is feeling better but won’t decide for at least another week when he will resume practicing.

Regardless of when he returns, he still plans to captain Canada’s Olympic team in Salt Lake City from Feb. 15-24.

“Right from Day 1, I said I was playing in the Olympics and that’s not going to change,” he said. “The only way I wouldn’t play is if I’m not able to come back and play a few weeks with the Penguins and get myself into shape. I’ve never wavered from the start. I’m looking forward to it.”
