Frankel Can Add to Total

Share

For the first time in recent memory, trainer Bobby Frankel did not win a stakes race Saturday.

Of course, he didn’t have a runner in either the Golden Ballet Stakes or Waya Handicap at Hollywood Park.

On his way to a second consecutive Eclipse Award as the nation’s top trainer, Frankel might be able to add another stakes victory to his collection when Euchre makes his comeback in the $100,000 Native Diver Handicap, a Grade III at 11/8 miles on the dirt.

A 5-year-old gelding owned and bred by Frank Stronach, Euchre hasn’t run since winning the Cornhusker Handicap at Prairie Meadows on July 7, and that came after he had captured the All American at Bay Meadows about six weeks earlier.

The 6-5 favorite on the morning line, Euchre is a big fan of Hollywood Park, having won three of his previous four races here, including the Bel Air Handicap in July 2000.

Rounding out the field are Momentum, who will be making his dirt debut for trainer Craig Dollase; Pie N Burger, the 7-2 second choice; Penamacor, who won the last time he raced on the main track; Grey Memo, who was a distant third in this race last year, and longshots Last Parade, a winner at 30-1 on Nov. 23, and Madraar.

Race of the day: The sixth is a contentious sprint for California-bred maiden fillies. The six-furlong dash lured a full field of 12 and several are first-timers from successful barns. They include Pammy’s Grand, trained by Jenine Sahadi; Rio Samba (Paco Gonzalez), Fresh Tarte (Bob Baffert), Icy Avenue (Darrell Vienna) and Skys Bold Princess (Jerry Dutton).

Who’s hot: Coyote Lakes. The 7-year-old gelding is only one for six in 2001, but the move to Aqueduct’s inner track could turn things around for the Arizona-bred. He has won five of nine in his career on the course. He is among six scheduled to run in today’s seventh under jockey Mike Luzzi.

Who’s not: Boysidue. A 20-1 shot in today’s fifth at Hollywood Park, the 7-year-old gelding is three for 52 in his career and one for 28 since the start of 2000.

Exotically speaking: A pick three singling Max’s Buddy in the fourth, using Flashy Finish and Bluesthestandard in the fifth and Respectfully, Fresh Tarte, Icy Avenue, Rio Samba and Provocative Nature in the sixth.

Winners: (Previous day/meet total): 3/55. Money (previous day/meet): $12.00/$301.60. Total money bet: $414.
