Washington was the winner in a game between two teams trying to keep their comeback story lines alive.

Tony Banks threw for 210 yards and a touchdown, and Stephen Davis rushed for 110 yards as the Redskins won for the sixth time in seven games, 20-10, over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.

Davis became the first Washington running back to gain more than 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons.

“It’s great, considering I’m the first guy to do it with all the running backs who came through here--John Riggins, Terry Allen, Larry Brown, those type of guys,” Davis said.

Washington made NFL history by coming back from an 0-5 start to win five in a row, but the streak ended with a 20-14 loss at Dallas last week.

“We really had a lot we needed to get off our chest,” said LaVar Arrington, whose 43-yard interception return set up Brett Conway’s 22-yard field goal that gave Washington a 10-3 halftime lead.

Davis’ one-yard touchdown run after Banks’ 40-yard pass to Rod Gardner put Washington ahead, 20-3, with 8:20 remaining.

“What you have to be able to do is bounce back when something bad happens,” Arizona Coach Dave McGinnis said. “We didn’t bounce very well.”

The Redskins did not turn the ball over, but were penalized 13 times for 99 yards. At 6-6, Washington is one game behind New Orleans and Tampa Bay for the NFC’s final wild-card berth and two behind NFC East leader Philadelphia.

“The only way to get back in this thing is to try to win every game possible, try to go on another five-game streak,” Banks said.

The Cardinals (5-7) had won three in a row.
