Exploring Term Limits
Re “Mayoral Veto on Term Limits Stands--for Now,” Dec. 1: While Mayor James Hahn and the Los Angeles City Council might be exploring for a reasonable and acceptable approach to term limits, let me suggest how they might avoid repeating either of the mistakes of the past which, in one case, disenfranchises voters and, in the other, allows unlimited homesteading in an office.
A balanced approach would be to allow extra terms but with an increasingly difficult plurality to obtain them. One formula might be that, for a third term you would need to win 55% of the vote; for a fourth, 60%, etc. While the exact percentages might be argued, this would accommodate all sides of the democratic equation. It would also be setting an example for the rest of the country, wherever the issue is debated.
