Three Ventura County schools are among 33 in the state to be nominated for one of public education’s top awards.

Thousand Oaks High School, Colina Middle School in Thousand Oaks and Chaparral Middle School in Moorpark will be considered for the National Blue Ribbon Schools award.

A panel in Washington will review the applications in January and recommend visits for the finalists. Visits, used to verify the accuracy of the applications, will take place from February through April. Winners will be announced in May.

“We’re very happy about it,” Chaparral Principal Creig Nicks said. “The application was a very good self-examination tool for us.”

The U.S. Department of Education honors public elementary and secondary schools in alternating years. In May, University Elementary in Thousand Oaks and Oak Hills Elementary in Oak Park were designated Blue Ribbon schools.
