Mission Viejo High and Newport Beach Corona del Mar tied, 0-0, Tuesday in a nonleague girls’ soccer game.
Corona del Mar, the No. 9-ranked team in the region by The Times, peppered Mission Viejo junior goalkeeper Katie Wright with 17 shots on goal, including two in the final two minutes that just missed their mark.
“We certainly had our opportunities,” Coach Ron Evans said.
Corona del Mar (5-2-3) almost scored minutes into the game when Heather Lohman dribbled uncontested into the Mission Viejo zone before launching a shot that hooked around the net. The Sea Kings also had chances to score in the final two minutes of the game, but shots by Alison Brawner and Lauren Sheperdson were wide.
Mission Viejo (1-2-2) had 12 shots on goal, including three each by Alyssa Maloney and Stacey Mescher. Mescher had two breakaways in the first half that were turned back by goalkeeper Rachel Waters, who was credited with seven saves.
