Apolo Ohno easily won the 1,000-meter race Sunday in the U.S. Olympic short-track speedskating trials on a day when a crash sent leading woman skater, Caroline Hallisey, to a hospital for precautionary tests.

With four races remaining, Ohno, 19, leads with 3,948 points.

Hallisey tried to pass Sarah Lang on the inside of a turn in their 1,000-meter semifinal heat. Hallisey tumbled over Lang and slammed into a padded wall.

Cottonwood Hospital spokesman Jess Gomez said Hallisey appeared injury-free and passed all the diagnostic tests.

In the women’s final, four-time Olympian Amy Peterson finished first but was disqualified for impeding another skater.

That vaulted Julie Goskowicz into first.

The trials continue Thursday. The six men and six women with the most points earn spots on the Olympic team.
