A fishmonger was fined by a Helsinki court for allowing his fish to suffer while on sale, a Finnish newspaper reported.

A veterinarian complained to Magnus Ekstrom that the burbots were moving their gills and wriggling, indicating that they were in pain.

Ekstrom whacked the fish to prove they were dead, but they continued to flop. The vet called the police, who arrived with wailing sirens, the Kauppalehti newspaper reported. Ekstrom was fined $41 and ordered to pay $152 in legal fees.
