In Middle-earth, it don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got that ring. So when young Hobbit Frodo Biggins (Elijah Wood) inherits the One Ring, lost for centuries and the key to the future of civilization, he runs into powerful forces who will do anything to possess it. Filmmaker Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first book of J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic trilogy, tells the story of Frodo and his courageous band as they attempt to return the elusive ring to the fires of Mount Doom and destroy it. Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen and Liv Tyler co-star.

Nashville has a recent history of sending distinctive artists into exile, which, in the case of Jann Browne, has benefited Southern Californians. After a couple of albums for Curb Records in the early ‘90s, the country-edged singer moved back to Orange County, where she can be found performing material from her new, independent release, “Missed Me by a Mile.”

Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine and others will present “Dreamgirls, the 20th Anniversary Celebration,” benefiting the Diva Foundation and Project Angel Food. The Broadway musical by Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger is about a glamorous Supremes-like R&B; group on its bumpy rise to pop stardom. Ralph and Devine, two of the original “Dreams” in the 1981 Broadway production crafted by director-

choreographer Michael Bennett, will perform excerpts from the show.

For his second program of this December visit to the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s podium, former music director Zubin Mehta conducts one of his specialties, the Verdi Requiem. His soloists, all making their first Philharmonic appearances, are Italian soprano Fiorenza Cedolins, Americans Dolora Zajick and Stuart Neill, and Italian basso Carlo Colombara.
