A 60-year-old man selling his 1995 BMW was shot by a prospective buyer as the two took the car for a test drive in the West San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles police said Friday.

The shooting, which occurred near Amestoy Avenue and Cantara Street in Northridge, was reported at 10:45 p.m. Thursday, robbery detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department said.

A short time later, the man tried to commandeer the vehicle, pulled out a semiautomatic handgun and shot out the windshield. The two men struggled before the seller was shot once in the upper body and fell out of the car. The gunman then took off in the BMW.

The gunman is described as Filipino, 6 feet tall and weighing 150 pounds. He was wearing a black jacket and had earrings in both ears.

The wounded man was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he was treated and released, police said.
