Antiwar Activists Sue Over Banner’s Removal
Two Santa Cruz women who say their antiwar banners were taken down by public officials because of their content filed suit Friday in San Jose federal court on grounds their right to free speech was violated.
In a statement, Cassandra Brown and Amy Courtney said that on Nov. 27 they hung a banner with the words “At What Cost” and an image of a skeleton on an overpass above California 17.
The banner was placed near an American flag and another banner honoring New York victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The women say their banner was the only one removed by a Scotts Valley police officer.
