Roy Nears Victory Milestone

Patrick Roy stopped 18 shots for his 499th career victory and Brian Willsie scored two goals, as the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Minnesota Wild, 6-3, Sunday night at Denver to move into first place in the Northwest Division.

With his next victory, Roy (499-287-114) will become the first goalie to reach 500.

Alex Tanguay had a goal and an assist, and Scott Parker had three assists for the Avalanche.

Jim Dowd, Andrew Brunette and Aaron Gavey scored for the Wild, which was outshot, 49-21. Dwayne Roloson made 43 saves for Minnesota.

Detroit 5, Chicago 0--Dominik Hasek stopped 23 shots at Chicago for his third shutout this season and second in a row.

Hasek stopped 19 shots by San Jose in a 3-0 victory Friday. He has given up one goal in three games.

Brendan Shanahan, Brett Hull and Luc Robitaille each had a goal and an assist, and Chris Chelios and Igor Larionov scored.

The Red Wings extended their lead in the Central Division to nine points over the second-place Blackhawks.

New York Rangers 3, Ottawa 2--Petr Nedved’s off-balance wrist shot with 1:01 to play lifted the Rangers at New York.

Theo Fleury scored two power-play goals for New York, and Brian Leetch had two assists.

Ottawa’s Wade Redden tied the score, 2-2, at 12:51 of the third period on a power play.

Zdeno Chara scored an unassisted short-handed goal for the Senators.

San Jose 1, Nashville 1--Petr Tenkrat scored with 35 seconds left in regulation, giving the Predators a tie and stretching their home unbeaten streak to 11 games.

After the Predators called a timeout, Andy Delmore fired a pass across the ice to Tenkrat, who sent in a shot from the right face-off circle for a short-handed goal.

The Sharks’ goal, by Owen Nolan at 6:19 of the first period, also came with a man short.

Dallas 4, Atlanta 1--Pat Verbeek scored the go-ahead goal and set up another in the third period at Atlanta.

Sergei Zubov, Kirk Muller and Jamie Langenbrunner scored for Dallas. Marty Turco won his fifth in a row.

Dallas, 4-0 against Atlanta, is 9-4 in its last 13 games to move four points behind Pacific Division-leading San Jose.
