A former mental patient charged with stabbing eight schoolchildren to death in June pleaded guilty today, saying he wanted to pay for the crimes with his life.

Mamoru Takuma, 38, who has a history of schizophrenia, entered the guilty plea at the first hearing of his trial at Osaka District Court in western Japan.

Seven girls and a boy, ages 6 to 8, were killed when Takuma burst into their classroom at the Ikeda Elementary School in Osaka and started slashing at random, injuring 13 other children and two teachers.
