A sidelined Steve Yzerman wasn’t enough to slow down the Red Wings Thursday night at Detroit.

Brendan Shanahan scored his 20th goal and added an assist as the Red Wings beat Columbus, 5-1, in their first game of the season without their captain.

Yzerman may be out one-to-two weeks because of a high ankle bruise after being hit by a shot from Minnesota’s Filip Kuba on Wednesday night. Yzerman hopes to be back sooner, claiming the one-to-two-week estimation is precautionary.

“I think it’s more day-to-day,” Yzerman said.

Luc Robitaille, one of five Red Wings to score, hopes Yzerman is back soon.

“It’s a big miss, he’s a great player,” Robitaille said. “But everybody is going to have to pick up the slack.”

Detroit, which has an NHL-best 58 points, extended its unbeaten streak to five games. The Red Wings (27-8-3-1) will need Yzerman this season, but they didn’t need him to beat Columbus (9-22-5-1), which has the worst record in the Western Conference.

In addition to Robitaille’s go-ahead goal in the first and Shanahan’s second-period goal, which extended his streak with at least 20 goals to 14 seasons, Mathieu Dandenault, Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom scored.

After Mike Sillinger scored for the Blue Jackets midway through the first period to tie the game, 1-1, Detroit scored a goal later in that period, two in the second and one in the third.

Ottawa 5, New York Islanders 2--Marian Hossa scored his 12th goal of the season on a power play with 14:50 left in the third period as the Senators spoiled Alexei Yashin’s return to Ottawa.

Radek Bonk scored twice, and Andre Roy and Wade Redden also scored for the Senators as the sold-out crowd of 18,500 enthusiastically booed Yashin--Ottawa’s all-time leading scorer--every time he touched the puck.

Chicago 3, Colorado 1--Steve Passmore, making just his fifth start of the season, stopped 23 shots and recorded an assist as the Blackhawks won at Chicago.

It was Colorado’s second loss in 17 games (12-2-3).

Jim Campbell and Bob Probert scored their first goals of the season to help the Blackhawks move ahead of the Avalanche into second place in the Western Conference.

Colorado goaltender Patrick Roy, who posted his 500th career win at Dallas Wednesday, was given the night off for David Aebischer, who stopped 19 shots.

Carolina 3, Tampa Bay 2--Aaron Ward scored his first goal in 64 games as the Hurricanes won at Tampa Bay.

Ward snapped a 2-2 tie with 42.7 seconds left in the second period when his shot from the top of the right circle deflected off a Tampa Bay stick.

Vancouver 4, Calgary 2--Markus Naslund and Andrew Cassels each had a goal and an assist at Vancouver, Canada, as the Canucks ended a three-game losing streak.

Todd Bertuzzi and Trevor Linden also scored and Jan Hlavac added two assists for the Canucks, who won for just the fourth time in the last 14 games (4-8-2).
