Westchester Wins, Will Play Oak Hill

Hassan Adams scored 17 points and Westchester held off a late rally by New York City Rice to win, 76-71, Friday in the National Division semifinals of the Houston Academy tournament in Houston.

Trevor Ariza and Brandon Bowman each scored 13 for Westchester (11-0), which nearly lost the 11-point lead it held heading into the fourth quarter.

Rice (7-1) closed to within 68-67 with 2:40 left, but Adams made a shot down low and added two free throws in the final minute to help Westchester escape.

Westchester, The Times’ top-ranked team, plays perennial power Mouth of Wilson (Va.) Oak Hill Academy in the championship game tonight.

Fairfax 87, Dominguez 48--Evan Burns, Alex Bausley and Fernando Sampson each scored 12 as the second-ranked Lions coasted to the ninth-place semifinal victory in the National Division of the Torrey Pines tournament.

Fremont 72, Los Alamitos 64--Senior center Darren Brown had 20 points to lead the No. 3 Pathfinders (12-1) to the victory in the American Division semifinal of the Torrey Pines tournament.

Eisenhower 71, El Cajon Christian 36--Sean Marshall had 21 points to lead fifth-ranked Eisenhower to an easy victory in a National Division fifth-place semifinal.

Carlsbad 57, Santa Margarita 50--Derek Stockalper scored 26 points and Greg Nelson added 22 as Carlsbad handed the No. 7 Eagles (12-1) their first loss in a National Division semifinal. Brandon Rohe led Santa Margarita with 20 points.

Glendora 69, Bellevue (Wash.) Interlake 42--Spencer Foster had 24 points and 18 rebounds to lead the No. 10 Tartans (11-1) in the championship semifinals of the Bellevue (Wash.) tournament.

Larry Monroe added 14 points and five assists for Glendora.

Muir 81, Bellflower 64--Jamaal Hall scored 23 points and Ryan Hollins added 17 for the 11th-ranked Mustangs as they advanced to the championship game of the Brea Olinda tournament. Kevin Pledger scored 16 points for Bellflower (7-7).

El Segundo 58, Santa Maria St. Joseph 54--Jeremy Hopson scored 20 points for the No. 18 Eagles (11-2) in their championship semifinal victory of the Bakersfield Garces Memorial tournament.

Claremont 79, Esperanza 62--Shaddean Aaron had 26 points and 15 rebounds to lead No. 23 Claremont (11-4) to the Brea Olinda tournament victory. Perrin Johnson added 16 for the Wolfpack.

In girls basketball:

Esperanza 34, Woodbridge 30--Ashley Van Kurin scored 17 points and the No. 11 Aztecs (10-2) defeated No. 12 Woodbridge in the second round of pool play at the Edison tournament.

Trailing, 26-23, with less than two minutes left in the third quarter, Van Kurin scored the game’s next nine points, and Woodbridge scored only four points in the final 12 minutes 20 seconds.

Esperanza will play No. 25 Edison tonight and the winner will play Troy on Monday for the title.

Lynwood 83, Campbell County (Wyo.) 59--Andrea Adams and Sade Wiley-Gatewood each scored 20 points for Lynwood (10-0) in the championship semifinals of the Gillette (Wyo.) tournament.

Lynwood, The Times’ top-ranked team, plays North Side (Ark.) in tonight’s championship game.

South Broward (Fla.) 63, Narbonne 42--Tamara James had 19 points as South Broward outscored second-ranked Narbonne, 34-16, in the second half of the Peach State Classic semifinal at Atlanta. Jamie Funn scored 12 for Narbonne (8-3).

Troy 55, Huntington Beach 40--Amanda Livingston had 18 points, nine rebounds and five steals and Alicia Komaki had 10 points and six assists for fourth-ranked Troy (12-0) in an Edison tournament pool-play victory. Kelsey Ball had 19 points for Huntington Beach.

Buena 51, Lebanon (Mo.) 42--Courtney LaVere had 21 points to lead the eighth-ranked Bulldogs (9-3) to a semifinal-round win in the Springfield (Mo.) tournament.

Norco 51, Rosary 41--Kimberly Smith had 12 points and six assists for No. 16 Norco (8-3), which will play for third place in the Edison tournament on Monday.

In boys’ soccer:

Santa Margarita 2, El Toro 0--Sean Kardous and Christian Hanson scored goals for the sixth-ranked Eagles (14-1-2) and goalie Josh Holtrust made seven saves for his eighth shutout in the Trabuco Hills tournament semifinal. Tanner Wels’ goal gave the Eagles a 1-0 quarterfinal win over Burroughs.
