Knight Was Key to Bay Area Sweep

Among the unlikely heroes in UCLA’s road victories at California and Stanford last season was swingman Billy Knight, who came off the bench to contribute a total of 17 points in those games. He made two three-point baskets at Cal, and three more at Stanford in an overtime victory.

“I was just relaxed,” Knight said. “We were down by 20 [19, actually], and I just went in and hit some shots that helped everybody else out.”

Said Coach Steve Lavin: “Billy Knight was the key to those wins. When I think Bay Area, I think Billy Knight.”

Cal forward Sean Lampley has been named Pacific 10 Conference player of the week for his performance last week in road victories over the Washington schools. He averaged 24 points and 11.5 rebounds in those two games.

Lampley has moved into sixth place on Cal’s all-time scoring list with 1,531 points. He has led the Bears in scoring in 15 of 19 games and has reached 20 points 10 times. He’s also the first Cal player to rank among the school’s top 10 in scoring and rebounding since Brian Hendrick in 1993. If Lampley continues his pace, he will surpass Lamond Murray’s scoring total (1,688) by the end of the season.
