Testan Committed to Dartmouth

Running back Eric Testan of Oak Park High has committed to Dartmouth.

Three Hueneme football players also made college commitments. Running back Dwayne Taylor has committed to Utah, defensive back Julian Gooden will attend Weber State and running back Leslie Lee has chosen Idaho.

Defensive back Michael Washington of Paraclete has committed to Utah State.

BASEBALL

* The Colorado Rockies confirmed Saturday that they have rejected a counterproposal from pitcher Matt Harrington of Palmdale and his agent, Tommy Tanzer.

Harrington, picked No. 7 by the Rockies in the amateur draft, countered the Rockies’ recent offer of seven years, $4 million with an offer of four years, $4 million.

“I think people feel there’s a pit of money here, and we can reach back and grab money,” General Manager Dan O’Dowd of Colorado told Baseball America. “But we have budgets and we’re responsible for the budgets. And we can’t be criticized on one end for signing Mike Hampton and Denny Neagle [for more than $178 million] as we were, and then be criticized on the other end for not spending enough to sign an 18-year-old right-handed pitcher when the offer was $4 million.”

Tanzer acknowledged talks are at a standstill.

“They’re taking the position I knew they would, saying they’ve already spent all their money,” Tanzer said. “The truth is they’ve never really treated [Harrington] like the No. 1 kid that he is.”

Harrington, whose fastball has been clocked at 97 mph, could reenter the draft if the Rockies do not sign him by May 24.
