Are Track Fans Happy About Derailment?

Share

I read in the Feb. 1 paper--somewhat with glee--that the sponsor had withdrawn from the Powerade Indoor Track and Field Meet. I am an avid track fan and supporter, but the news article failed to report what a rip-off this meet was. I had planned to go from the moment I heard about it (even flying in from Las Vegas) until I heard how ridiculous the prices were--$75 for the best seats, and a separate fee of $35 to see only two hours of high school competition.

Quality and sane ticket prices build loyal fans. If they indeed intend to try again and have the Powerade track meet next year, they need to take lessons from the established track promoters in the area and charge reasonable prices.

In 1970, track and field was ranked the eighth most popular sport in America. Now it’s 42nd. Could it have anything to do with the administrators? Look in the dictionary under Peter Principle and you’ll find a picture of Skip Stolley, chairman of the L.A. Track and Field Organizing Committee.
