With one bite, this homey one-dish meal wards off the winter chill.

* The House: In an old Craftsman house, chef Scotter Kanfer cooks up a vegetarian potpie based on whatever rare veggies are available at the farmer’s market. * Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner: This Southland institution serves a classic chicken potpie: peas, carrots, potatoes, tender chunks of chicken and a slightly creamy sauce in a flaky golden crust. * Daily Grill: Beneath the puff pastry crust, you’ll find a deep-dish pie full of carrots, onions, peas and mushrooms, all sauteed in butter, plus steamed dark meat chicken and bechamel sauce, with a dash of lemon juice and Louisiana hot sauce. * Fred 62: This open-face potpie is a buttery pie shell topped with mashed potatoes, a roasted garlic nage, organic roasted chicken and an assortment of fresh vegetables, with fresh herbs and olive oil sauce around the edge of the plate. * Farm of Beverly Hills: Around the base of chef Hans Goplen’s hearty potpie is a generous portion of garlic mashed potatoes. Then you’ve got baby turnips, golden beets, peas, corn, rosemary, thyme and parsley along with big chunks of grilled chicken breast. * Pie n’ Burger: This straightforward potpie, created by the founder’s grandmother, is served in a deep dish and filled with baked chicken, carrots and peas in a secret sauce made with chicken stock, milk, poultry seasoning and a few extras.
