Marquette (14-10, 9-4 in Conference USA) held ceremonies to honor the late Al McGuire--the school’s coach from 1964-77--at halftime of an 82-64 victory over DePaul (12-13, 4-8). The court on which Marquette plays at Bradley Center in Milwaukee was officially named Al McGuire Court. A new athletic complex soon to be built on the Marquette campus will also be named Al McGuire Center. Among those attending the game were former DePaul coach Ray Meyer and Gov. Scott McCallum, who proclaimed it Al McGuire Day in Wisconsin. . . . Fresno State (21-5, 10-3 in the Western Athletic Conference) used a 26-8 second-half run in beating Southern Methodist, 77-64, at Dallas. SMU (18-9, 8-6) missed all 12 of its three-point shots in the second half. . . . Texas Christian (18-9, 7-6 in the WAC) was a 102-87 loser to Hawaii (13-12, 7-7) at Honolulu after reports in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and Dallas Morning News this week that Horned Frog starters Myron Anthony and Greedy Daniels were dismissed from the team last Friday after failing drug tests. Coach Billy Tubbs said last week the dismissals were for violation of team rules and related to each other. Anthony, 23, a senior from Jacksonville, Fla., was averaging 14.3 points and 7.4 rebounds a game. Daniels, 23, a junior from New Orleans, averaged 16.7 points and 5.8 assists, and was the school’s single-season leader in steals (108).
