Not even a poor performance by Chris Osgood and a three-goal deficit in the first-period were able to stop the Detroit Red Wings.

The Red Wings used the strong play of backup goalie Manny Legace, a potent power play and a four-point game from Brendan Shanahan to defeat the Phoenix Coyotes, 6-3, Sunday at Detroit. It gave Detroit an 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2) and extended their home unbeaten streak to 12 (11-0-1).

Shanahan, who had two goals and two assists, broke a 3-3 tie with a power-play goal at 8:23 of the third period as the Red Wings moved ahead of St. Louis for first place in the Central Division and second behind Colorado in the Western Conference.

Edmonton 3, Dallas 2--Todd Marchant scored on a breakaway 31 seconds into overtime at Edmonton.

Anson Carter and Daniel Cleary also scored for the Oilers, who have won three in a row and beat the Stars for the first time since April 3, 1998.

Darryl Sydor and Sergei Zubov scored for the Stars, who were 8-0-2 in their last 10 meetings with the Oilers.

Pittsburgh 6, New York Islanders 1--Few lines in NHL history have been more productive than the Mario Lemieux-Jaromir Jagr line, which has combined for nine scoring titles. But it isn’t the Penguins’ best line right now.

Robert Lang scored twice, and the Penguins didn’t need any goals from their stars to win at Pittsburgh. Lemieux had two assists--the 900th and 901st of his career.
